Duo appears for gang rape

The state alleges that Desmond Mpontshane, 19, and Boikanyo Manyika, 21, had unlawful sex with the complainant after a drinking spree at Area S bars complex.

They pleaded not guilty to the charge and told the court that they will engage attorneys to represent them in the matter.

In a surprising turn of events, Mpontshane absolved himself from the matter and told the court that Manyika is the one who raped the complainant.

However, the magistrate told him that he would be given the opportunity to state what happened during trial.

The public prosecutor, Inspector Semakaleng Mazibane, applied for the accused to be granted bail on condition that they provide two sureties, enter into own recognisance of P1,000, report at the Francistown Central police station fortnightly between working hours, not interfere with state witnesses and attend court as and when required.

Principal Magistrate Dumisani Basupi granted the accused bail on conditions proposed by the state.

The accused are due in court on August 24 for mention.
