Mosutha qualifies for World Amateur champs

Mosutha booked himself a ticket to the world event after winning the African amateur individual chess championships, which ended in Mozambique yesterday. The player won the Open Section with seven points out of a possible nine followed by Kiddy Makwaya of Zambia with 6.5 and Milton Botao of Mozambique with six points. Mosutha made his intentions of winning the event clear in the early stages of the tournament when he won his first three games in a row against Jose Monane of Mozambique in round one, Joao Amaral of Angola in round two and Mozambican Botao Milton in the third round. Mosutha continued with his winning streak up to the last round of the event with 6.5 out of eight points. Mosutha registered a draw against Gafar Izdine of Mozambique. The competition was open to all players representing African chess federations, which are affiliated to the World Chess Federation (FIDE). The federations must also be affiliated to the African Chess Confederation (FIDE Zones 4.1 to 4.4). Meanwhile, Candidate Master (CM) Thabo Gumpo proved his mettle when he won the first edition of the Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) ‘Who is Who?’ chess tournament held at Yarona Country Lodge in Mogoditshane over the weekend. The En-passent chess club player collected a convincing 5.5 points out of a possible seven. In his quest for victory, he drew with Mopati Jobe, Candidate Master Barileng Gaealafshwe and International Master Providence Oatlhotse and won all his other games. Oatlhotse of Mobile chess club came second followed by Thato Olebile in the third position. It was a shock result as Oatlhotse was tipped for honours as the top ranked Botswana player prepares for the Millionare’s chess championships in Las Vegas in October.
