Ants, ex- cons, thieves save the world

Marvel Comics is a comic book publishing house famous for creating most notable superhero characters such as Spiderman, Thor, Captain America, Batman, the Hulk, Ironman and the X-Men.

We have watched some of the trusted superheroes save the world against evil in the form of Avengers: Age of Ultron.  However this weekend we discovered another formidable hero in Ant-Man. Not only does this movie pack explosive action but is also engaging in the sense that it touches on perceptions on life.  For example the reception society gives ex-convicts. Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) shows faith that indeed ex-cons like Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) can still earn or reclaim their dignity by changing habits.  Well these two main actors brought a huge dose of spark to this action adventure.

For a movie, which has been in production since 2006, first draft compilations of Ant-Man matured and turned out perfectly like wine, as the final script was well orchestrated for starters.

In the beginning one wonders who exactly the superhero for this movie is as we constantly see a bunch of contrasting lives in the ageing Dr Pym fighting against his devious daughter and protégé, whilst Lang is also struggling to get jobs because of his criminal record.

Like other Marvel films, the movie is also action-oriented. There is a suit, which gives a thief supernatural ability, which funny enough scares him.

Scenes where Lang curiously tries on his stolen goods, and endures the horror of his life, when he shrinks to the size of an ant justify this.  He then gets washed down the tub.

Lang reduces in size with a suit power by organic atomic reduction ability, which becomes villain Darren Cross’s ultimate obsession, as he wants the technology for profitable gain. Cross makes allies with every little creature he possibly can, particularly ants of all species.

Chased by rats as an ant, Lang runs for his life across a dance floor, trying to avoid being crushed by dancing feet in his miniature form.

A favourite moment in the film is when Ant-Man takes down a bunch of Cross’ agents. He runs on top of a shooting gun before smacking the agent hard and the impact looks strong as if it were from a normal sized being. Ant-Man in my view was way better than Avengers: Age of Ultron, because everything is just fresh and crisp.  For example some of Ant-Man and Cross’ fights take place in the smallest and most unusual places.

The movie villain of this Marvel franchise fits the bill as compared to others. In comparison to other film concepts this film was similar to Tuxedo by Jackie Chan and Robert Downey Jr in Iron-Man, with regard to the suits that aid with superhuman ability. Ant-Man taps into themes of family, faith, love, justice and power as Lang has an estranged family life. The only hiccup from Ant-Man was the 3D aspect; the quality of the picture in 3D glasses at times seemed woozy.

This Marvel blockbuster has certainly left a mark at the box office. It ruled the charts for two consecutive weeks, but slipped to the third spot this time around.

It hit the mark when it premiered at $57 million three weeks back and now sits at staggering worldwide revenue of $293 million smashing its $130 million budget.
