Majadibodu distances himself from alleged BDP move

Majadibodu made the remarks in an interview yesterday. In an audiotape of a secret meeting organised by some BCP operatives and the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members recently, Majadibodu’s name was mentioned among BCP members who wanted to join the BDP. Apparently Majadibodu, who was not part of the secret meeting, is disgruntled about how certain things are done at BCP.  In the leaked tape, Majadibodu alleged that some of his constituents felt that he could win the Nata-Gweta constituency under the BDP banner.

But yesterday he said: “I have not thought about leaving the party. I remain a very staunch BCP member. I know that there is no permanent political home, but I have not reconsidered my political affiliation.

“I have not even mentioned to anyone that I want to leave the BCP or directed anyone to speak on my behalf with regards to my political career.” He said that he has not listened to the leaked audiotape but has heard about it.

Majadibodu explained that though he was not happy with some statements made by some leaders at the recent party congress in Kanye he has not thought about leaving the party as alleged.

“I initially felt that some statements made by some party leaders at the elective congress disenfranchised me as a candidate for the central committee position.

“However, after much thought and interaction with some party members, I felt that the issues were trivial. After all in politics you can never be 100% happy,” he said. Majadibodu also said that he has made inroads at his constituency under the BCP banner. “Before I contested elections at Nata-Gweta we never surpassed 800 votes, but I garnered over 2,000 in my first attempt in 2009. In 2014 I made another notable improvement garnering 2,954 against the BDP’s 3,424 votes.

“The results give me hope that I can win the constituency under the BCP. This is why I have not thought about leaving,” he said.  The BCP spokesperson Dithapelo Keorapetse responded yesterday to allegations linking Majadibodu to the BDP:

 “We cannot rely on hearsay. However, such kind of hearsay is worth following and it is only worth it to take action or engage those involved in such hearsay after further investigation,” he said. Keorapetse added that the party is still investigating the matter in which their members had a secret rendezvous with BDP.
