Two entrepreneurs, Seabelo Masasa and Oabona Gosalamang, incepted Naomii Music last week.  The online music library boasts of strictly local music content of different genres.

Radio personality DJ Izzy who is impressed by this new development said, “I think it is definitely a step in the right direction.

There are a lot of Botswana hits and great music in general that is old and hard for people to find and one thing that wowed me about these chaps is that they do not only focus on new music, they also want to add classics so I am excited to be able to purchase or stream classic local music.”

He mentioned that Naomii Music has brought opportunities for musicians to make money through their music. Artists get returns after every six months; they receive 70 percent from the proceeds.

This platform allows one to purchase music in singles or as a full album. Afro pop songstress-cum-journalist, Sethunya Maele believes that this platform will help local artists distribute their music to international markets, “It’s a great initiative because locally we did not have our own online music distribution.” She is also planning on selling her tracks on Naomii Music. Urban music disc jockey, DJ Fauz who is also considering selling his music on the online music store said Naomii Music is a proper distribution channel.  “It’s different from going to the shops and purchasing a CD because some music stores do not have certain music,” he said.

He was, however, disappointed that the online music store has only established artists on its shelves. The music store is currently selling music from the likes of ATI, Lizibo, Kearoma Rantao, MMP Family, Kast, DJ Kuchi and Abigail Isa.

Rapper Touch Motswako is also impressed by the online music store, “That’s a good development for us musicians mostly looking at the fact that we are living in the cyber hustle era.  Our target market is highly cyber active, which means musicians can utilise the Naomii platform to sell music.” One can purchase songs on the online music library using My Zaka or Orange Money.  You can also purchase the music directly from the website www.naomiimusic.com.  It can be accessed from anywhere regardless of your location.

In neighbouring South Africa artists such as AKA, Tumi, K.O. and Cassper Nyovest have managed to make fortunes through online music stores such as iTunes.
