Speaking at the two athletes’ welcome ceremony at the National Stadium yesterday, Olopeng congratulated both athletes for a job well done.  “I also wish to thank their managers, coaches and sponsors for bringing out the best in them,” he said. Makwala did not attend the ceremony as he remained behind in Germany, preparing for the World Championships later this month.

Olopeng pleaded with everyone, including the government, private sector, sports administrators and Batswana to pledge support in any way possible.

“Everyone should prioritise investment in sport in order to develop athletes from grassroots level,” he said.  He said both athletes deserved a pat on the back after a sterling performance at the Samsung Diamond League.

Olopeng urged sports administrators to support and protect athletes.

“Sport administrators must keep the fire burning through sound strategies, planning and good governance,” he said. The minister advised Amos to embrace discipline and self-control in order to continue in his path of success. “Respect and listen to your parents, coaches and managers. That will prolong your life and help you maintain your success,” Olopeng told Amos.

The minister organised the welcome ceremony following Amos and Makwala’s brilliant respective performances in Europe.

Amos leads the 800m Diamond League race standings with 16points, six ahead of arch-rival and Kenyan, David Rudisha while Makwala reclaimed the Africa 400m record with a 43:72 time in Switzerland last month. President Ian Khama, an avid sports follower, made a surprise brief appearance at the ceremony.
