“Motivation comes in many ways and this is surely a great way to inspire athletes,” Amos said at his welcome ceremony held at the National Stadium yesterday.

“You have to rally behind me during the good and the bad times. In athletics we have good and bad races. You have to be there for us all the time.

“We need you to be with us through thick and thin,” he said.

The 21-year old athlete from Marobela threatened to relocate to another country if Batswana do not rally behind him.

“At the end of the day, I also have to look at what is best for myself as an athlete,” he said.  Amos’s coach, Jean Verster reiterated that support is important for every athlete’s growth.

“Support in Africa is a big problem unlike in European countries,” he said.

Verster said athletes in Europe always travel with their team for support, but the same cannot be said of athletes like Amos.

“They need all kind of support including medical assistance, but it is very unfortunate that as coach I don’t always travel with Amos,” he said.

Verster said athletes needed support more especially from the top people who make decisions.

The Minister of Youth Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng organised the welcome ceremony for Amos who has been in outstanding form in the Diamond League.

Gaborone mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe, Botswana National Sports Commission chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng were among dignitaries who welcomed Amos at the Sir Seretse Khama International airport.

President Ian Khama also made a surprise appearance at the stadium where the ceremony was held.

Former 400m-world champion, Amantle Montsho was among those who attended the ceremony.
