All award recipients were given certificates and various gifts sets, which were all sealed. United were crowned the women’s league champions in the 2014/15 season. The club also dominated the league awards as none of the players from their opponents were honoured.

The players’ player of the season was awarded to Cassandra Zulu while Keatlaretse Nthobang scooped the young player of the season award. Obusitswe Letebele emerged as the best goalkeeper.

Lethal striker, Mokgabo Thanda won the top goal scorer award while Masego Masinki took the most disciplined player prize. The awards that were held at the Civic Centre here were themed ‘recognition and promotion of women sport’.

Speaking at the league’s maiden award ceremony, the chairperson of Francistown Regional Football Association Desmond Jenamo said the awards were held to motivate women to continue excelling in the beautiful game and inspire others to join them in a bid to grow the women football.

“Just like men, women have the potential in football. What they need is to be appreciated and motivated in order to reach a high degree of excellence,” he said.

He also called on companies to sponsor, and members of the public to support women’s football.

The Francistown mayor, Sylvia Muzila encouraged the Francistown United players to strive for excellence and show seriousness towards the game.

“If you continue to display seriousness and excel, you will attract investors to sponsor the team and probably the league,” she said.

Muzila also urged the players to refrain from alcohol and drug abuse as it could hamper their progress in the game thus impacting negatively on the development of women’s football, which is still at its infancy in the country.
