Mixed reactions: Table tennis clubs are divided over the BTTA's four year strategic plan

Clubs are yet to endorse the four-year plan, which was launched several weeks ago. BTTA also secured a P150, 000 sponsorship deal from Master Timbers.

New Horizon table tennis club secretary general, Marang Ramahobo told Mmegi Sport that their club was never informed about the strategic plan prior to its launch.

“The committee informed us that there would be a meeting to discuss the strategic plan, but to our surprise they called a press conference and launched the four-year plan,” he said. Ramahobo blatantly told Mmegi Sport that the four-year plan is not in line with BTTA’s vision.

“We want to be the fastest growing sport in Botswana, but we can’t even compete at continental level,” he said.

Ramohobo added that clubs have to be engaged in order to move forward.

“We must be realistic. This strategy cannot work because we don’t have high performance centres. We need more tournaments,” he said.

The secretary general of Smash Maniacs, Matshidiso Osi however hailed the four-year plan as a step in the right direction, emphasising that the plan is aligned to BNSC’s Vision 2028. Osi also indicated that the plan was still a draft and clubs could still make an input.

“For the plan to go forward, clubs have to adopt and beef it up. The plan is visionary because it will not only develop athletes, but it will help the clubs to grow,” she said.  Osi said their club was given a chance to air their views concerning the plan.  BTTA competitions director Kudzanani Motswagole insisted that clubs were sufficiently informed about the development plan.  “We gave everyone a chance to give us feedback before anything else,” he said.

Motswagole also said the clubs’ main role is to adopt the plan and make some recommendations where possible.

“The clubs have to make input because they play an advisory role and must be informed ahead of the Annual General Meetings,” he said.  Motswagole added that a meeting would be held where clubs would adopt the amendment.
