The awards, which will be sponsored by Nortex, come after the just ended FRAFA league in which Francistown United were crowned champions.

The northern region women’s league was launched early this year with a mandate to support women in football, but only six teams were registered, according to FRAFA chairperson Desmond Jenamo.

Jenamo said one team had withdrawn from the league due to financial constraints. The teams, which took part in the league, include Francistown United, Ladies Focus, Reteng Banyana, DDJ’s and the Coloured Stars.

Jenamo also told Mmegi Sport the awards are meant to appreciate and honour the champions and outstanding players. He said FRAFA is trying to develop women football in Francistown in order to bring it to required standards.   “The awards play a role in recognising women who have passion for football and are willing to take it to the next level,” he said.  Jenamo added that the Botswana Football Association (BFA) supports the awards ceremony, adding that prizes would be awarded to the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, player of the season, most disciplined player and the players’ player of the season.

“We appeal to the nation to help us sponsor the northern football league so that it can attract more teams,” he said.  Jenamo said they were targeting eight teams next season, which would hopefully improve their competitiveness in the league.
