In a memorandum to all employees on July 24, the acting commissioner general Segolo Lekau said under these unfortunate circumstances, employees were informed that Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU) has commenced industrial action throughout the country.

“However, the industrial action does not affect non-BOPEU members and as such, the said employees are requested to report to their supervisors or managers as per BURS operational hours, to continue facilitating provision of service to the members of the public,” said Lekau.

He also said it should be noted that BOPEU members who wish to continue coming to work are encouraged to report to their supervisors for deployment. Lekau said managers would deploy all employees reporting to work needy areas to facilitate provision of minimum service to the public.

“Staff is informed that employees participating in the industrial action should not coerce in any manner other employees who are not striking. During this trying period, management pleads with employees to minimise applications for personal leave.”

He also said management was doing its best to minimise total disruption of service to the public.

“Employees are encouraged to do their best to provide service to members of the public during this unfortunate period,” said Lekau.

The parties reached a deadlock in salary negotiations earlier this month.

BURS had proposed a six percent salary increment but the union wanted 11 percent.
