Local athlete creates a T-shirt label

Now, the 22-year-old Koone’s ‘GWAP’ fashion label, which has been in the market for two months now, has sold 65 t-shirts and three jerseys in its first sale.

“I have many pre-sold shirts and I am always waiting for anyone who is hoping to get their hands on one of my shirts”, he said.

The third year business management student at GIPS, who hails from Francistown said he was inspired by big brands such as Adidas and Puma and he hoped to one day reach that level.

“I have always wanted a label, and this is my time,” said the 2010 Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) junior sportsperson of the year.

He said being a sportsperson also inspired him to create the label.

Koone is currently working on sponsoring a local cyclist with his clothing merchandise.

“I wish to help my community at the same time build a good reputation for myself,” he explained.

The karateka who is in the national team said his target is both the youth and the elderly people. Koone said he doesn’t have a market place as yet because of financial restrictions.  “We go around every institution where people place orders and we deliver to them directly,” he indicated.

Koone said the name ‘GWAP’ is an English slang word that means money. He said in order to be successful these days one has to have money.

“I want my label to become a big brand,” he said. Koone also appreciated the support he gets from his friends and family.  “They have been very welcoming and they understand that I have to balance school, sports and my project,” he said.
