Run! save yourself

I met with the audience at New Capitol, Gamecity to catch up with an old friend Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, before things took a bad slide.

San Adreas is a 2015 3D disaster film, which follows the exploits of our protagonist and their attempts to avert, escape or cope with the disaster and its aftermath. The story line unfolds as the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives in, triggering the biggest ever 9.6 magnitude earthquake in California. In the aftermath a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Johnson) is faced with finding his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) and embarking on a dangerous rescue mission journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter (Alexandra Daddario). But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning.

Director Brad Peyton brings the thought-provoking screenplay to life.

This time around, Dwayne Johnson did not require the use of his superman muscles. We’ve grown to enjoy this guy’s work over the years for his trademark “badass-don’t dare mess with me” roles of beating up bad guys from Rundown, Walking Tall, Fast and Furious to Hercules. Johnson in San Andreas plays Ray, a loving single father to his daughter.  Adding more required sting to the thriller element of this movie, just like most disaster films, San Andreas uses computer-generated imagery (CGI) such as special effects features, which enhances its exaggeration of the 9.6 earthquake.  The movie has a lot of scary scenes, which include civilians being swallowed by cracking grounds as well as others being crushed by falling building blocks.  As if that’s not enough, San Andreas’ quake thrives on the big screen because of the well-orchestrated devastating sound effects. After the quake had ravaged through San Francisco, more hell breaks loose once again when further damage is done by a water wave as the shifting of tectonic plates were felt beneath the Pacific Ocean. The results of the tectonic movement were delightful for movie enthusiasts who relish on scary things. Most hot movies are shot on iconic 5 kilometers San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, which is amongst the seven wonders of the modern world. It is visible in Pacific Rim, The Hulk and Rise of The Planet Apes amongst others and they have gone on to be successful films. Not only does San Francisco based storylines dish out some fascinating films, they also tend to have interesting scenery with the symbolic bridge paving way for great cinematography as well. The movie taps into other human nature elements such as values/themes.  After the devastating disaster, Ray has one thing in mind (family) perfectly showcasing the notion that family comes first even in time of distress. No matter how torn apart your family is, during times of difficulty, families always pull through by sticking together as showcased by Johnson giving us a dose of how far he would go to protect his estranged wife and his daughter.

The movie is also a bit funny as it thoroughly shows human traits such as moments where by others hope to capitalise on the tragedy. Some try to seize opportunities to steal at shops rather than running for their lives or saving others.

The film proved to be a showstopper with well-orchestrated depiction of events that unfolds in most cases.

Brad Peyton’s film certainly challenges other national disaster epics like World War Z, The Day After Tomorrow and Rise Of The Planet Apes amongst others that nearly reached the heights of the best tragedy film of all time being the legendary Titanic, which grossed over $2.billion dollars worldwide.

San Andreas is currently number 13 on box office chart only a month and a half since its international release. According to box office, this blockbuster was produced on a $150 million budget. The film went on to amass a worldwide figure of $459 million.
