Police caution motorists after road mishaps claim more lives

Semakaleng Matlhake of Botswana Police Service (BPS) said that the deaths were due to reckless driving, failure to use safety belts and the overindulgence in alcohol and drugs. He said that the number has since increased as only three deaths were recorded during the same period last year. “This year we have recorded nine deaths from January to June. The number has increased as last year we recorded three deaths. The deaths are due to drivers who fail to obey road rules,” he said.
Matlhake also said that drivers should desist from the tendency to disobey road laws as this ends up costing their lives and even the lives of passengers and pedestrians. He said that in all nine deaths, five deaths were caused by drivers’ failure to use safety belts. “Drivers should avoid the tendency of buckling up only when they see police officers. Safety belts should be used even when police officers are not there,” he said.
Besides urging the community to spread information concerning road safety, he also encouraged motorists who have children to buy car seats designed for them to ensure their safety.
Kgosi Mosweu of Ikageleng Phase One ward expressed concern on alcohol and drug abuse. He said that it is so unfortunate that most of the accidents are associated with substance abuse. “Most of the accidents that are reported are caused by substance abuse especially during times like holidays.
“Most people have lost their lives during such days as President Holidays,” he said. Mosweu also stated that it is quite shocking and disappointing that people continue to lose lives due to accidents despite the fact that information on road safety is widely spread.
“People are taught everyday about road safety and it is sad that they continue to die due to road accidents caused by reckless driving and alcohol abuse,” he said.
The prayer session was organised by the District Road Safety Committee in conjunction with the Ministers Fraternal. Prayers were for healing and speedy recovery to road traffic victims. They also prayed against the spirit of accidents and against substance abuse and fatigue. A moment of silence was also observed and candle lighting done in remembrance of those who have fallen victim to road traffic accidents.
