The Constitution is mum about cabinet ministers who want to contest for elections while in office.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokesperson Osupile Maroba said section 62 of Botswana’s Constitution only talks about public servants not cabinet ministers.

“IEC is relying much on the Constitution of the country and its Act. But there is nothing in our Act that talks about the position of cabinet ministers. Unless someone shows us a section that says he should be disqualified because he is a specially elected MP,” Maroba said.

He said so far there is nothing requiring Molale to resign from his post.

Nominations of candidates for Goodhope/Mabule will be held on July 24 and the election for the area is going to be in August 15.

Three political parties, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and Botswana Congress Party will be battling it out.

However, Molale will not get the position on a silver platter as he is scheduled to battle it out with four other contenders in their party primary elections over the weekend.
