BNSC AGM paves way for sports commission

The outgoing BNSC chairman, Solly Reikeletseng said the Botswana National Sport Commission Act would take effect at a date to be formally communicated by the Minister of Youth Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng.

“The act provides that the first meeting of the commission shall be called by the minister,” he said. He added that they are happy with the coming of the Commission as ‘it is what we have been waiting for’ in many years.

Reikeletseng said the new Commission would bring the expansion of the functions of the body corporate responsible for the matters of sport in Botswana. “It will change the financial year and the composition of the board,” he said.

Reikeletseng added that it was fitting to pay tribute to the foundational year of 1965 when BNSC was formally given legal status through an Act of Parliament.

“This Act has gone through several years of various review stages. In each review period, proper consideration was made on the sporting landscape prevailing at the time,” he explained.

Reikeletseng said BNSC would always be remembered for the milestone years as it marks its 50th anniversary.  At the AGM, new board members were elected into the board and the only two nominees, Gift Nkwe and Daniel Molaodi were automatically elected into the two vacant posts of additional members.

The director of the elections, Thato Kgosimore said from the onset seven candidates were submitted for nomination, but only one was spoilt.

He said out of the remaining six, four were declared invalid in accordance with the BNSC elections guidelines.

He told the various member affiliates who raised complaints to formally launch their appeals within seven days.
