This will be Sereetsi & the Natives’s first international performance since the act set the local airwaves alight with refreshing hits such as Thaa Kokome, Robete and Ke Boletsa Mongwe, which are on heavy rotation across the country’s radio stations.
The hits are from Sereetsi & the Natives’s debut album titled Four Strings Confessions.Hosted by the Music Discipline at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the international African music symposium will bring together academics, artists and documentary film makers with an interest on Africa and the Diaspora.
The International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) powers the event.ICTM is a Non-Governmental Organisation in formal consultative relations with UNESCO. Its aims are to further the study, practice, documentation, preservation and dissemination of traditional music and dance of all countries.
In addition to performing at the international event, Sereetsi & The Natives will also present a music workshop entitled ‘Unmasking the Four String Guitar of Botswana.’
Before the release of the act’s celebrated album in May 2015, Sereetsi authored and published a ground breaking guitar instructional book/CD in March 2013 titled The Solo Four String Guitar of Botswana.
Sereetsi is critically acclaimed as the foremost curator of the four-string folk guitar style and is set to go on a nationwide guitar workshop tour that will take him to 15 towns and villages across Botswana teaching the guitar tradition.
Sereetsi & The Natives recently collaborated on a song with US jazz band, Anthony Stanco and the Crucial Elements as part of the US Embassy’s cultural exchange programme.
