BDP Goodhope/Mabule elections slated for July 18

The newly elected party central committee took this decision on Tuesday when it met for the first time since the weekend Mmadinare congress. The committee concluded that the contenders would be Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Eric Molale, Fankie Motsaathebe, Kopo Mononi, Richard Mogatle and Phillip Sebakile.
BDP secretary general Botsalo Ntuane said that the elections were an important process.
“These elections will enable democrats to select a candidate to represent the BDP in the forthcoming by election, on a date to be set by the relevant authority,” he said.
The post for Goodhope/ Mabule constituency fell vacant after UDC representative James Mathokgwane quit politics for greener pastures to join SPEDU in Selebi-Phikwe albeit under a cloud of controversy.
Comfort Maruping will represent the BCP while Kgosi Lotlamoreng II will stand under the UDC ticket.
Mmegi has learnt that Lotlamoreng will be introduced to the Botswana National Front (BNF) members during their party conference, which will be held in Goodhope over the President Day’s holidays.
Meanwhile, following the BDP weekend congress, President Ian Khama has also nominated five additional members to the central committee.
The nominated members include his young brother, Tshekedi Khama, who is also the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism. Former secretary general and Ngami MP Thato Kwerepe, has also made a comeback into the committee.
Ntuane’s predecessor Mpho Balopi has also been nominated together with Mmapula Phuduhudu and Dimpho Moncho.
Ntuane said that the party constitution empowers the president with powers to appoint the five additional members to the central committee.
