Speaking at a leadership forum yesterday, Maele said the development would force land authorities to clean up their waiting lists and ensure that land seekers have easy access.

“In October, I will make it public that people can now visit their respective Land Boards to inspect the waiting list.  This, therefore, means that you should clean up your waiting lists and regularly publicise them,” Maele said.

“This will promote transparency and inspire public confidence in our service delivery systems.”

However, the minister said the availability of residential plots would not be advertised to avoid a situation where people sleep next to land authority buildings.

“I do not want a situation where people sleep next to our office buildings or vandalise fences simply because they are coming to apply for land. Our ministry should be recognised as a customer-friendly organisation.

“Let us embody service excellence in our attitude, in our daily operations and in our strategies,” he said.

Part of this service excellence, he said, means that Land Board chairpersons should never hold meetings if the previous minutes are unavailable.

The ministry has also come up with a 10-point agenda on service delivery, in response to persistent public outcry on unsatisfactory service.

The 10-point includes treating complaints as useful feedback, maintaining professionalism at all times, maintaining zero tolerance for corruption, adhering to standards that have been set for different services, providing different platforms for engaging customers as well as promptly and appropriately dealing with lapses in the systems.
