Five affiliates given cars.

Speaking at the handover of vehicles to five affiliates at the National Stadium yesterday, the president of the Botswana Volleyball Federation, David Molaodi raised concern that the grants they received from BNSC keep dropping annually.

He also said the costs of running sports are increasing and therefore grants should be increased. He noted that this would ensure that all the sporting codes invest in appropriate resources that would produce quality athletes.

The vehicles that are worth a total of P1 million were received by the athletics, netball, softball, tennis and volleyball affiliates.

For his part, Olopeng said the vehicles were purchased by the BNSC with the support of his ministry. He said the vehicles would facilitate affiliates to position themselves to deliver the agenda of sport with more diligence.

“They should also help you with ease of reaching out to your strategic partners with a view to contribute to sport development and promotion. “In order to sustain our competitiveness, we recognise that grassroots development is paramount.

Those potential athletes in the grassroots level are not found in urban areas,” he said.

Olopeng pointed out that to accelerate the drive to the implementation of Vision 2028, there is need for more resources, adding that they may not be readily available at all times. He also said the plan is that in future, the fleet will be increased because codes are in need of transport.

“In 1996, the BNSC took giant steps towards the development of sport in this country. Among those steps was the development of Vision 2012. This was a 16 year long strategy that recognised the reality of the level of sport administration in our country, followed by development of initiatives in pursuit with better achievement of the council mandate,” he said.

Olopeng also noted that subsequent to the development of the vision, the council would then embark on the Affiliates Empowerment Scheme. He added that the programme is in line with efforts made to assist affiliates of the council with resources that would help them run their offices efficiently.
