H.E Sasara C George, Botswana’s ambassador to China, and a delegation of five officials from MoFAIC, accompanied Venson-Moitoi.

Senior Vice President of Huawei, Qu Wenchu, who showed the delegation around the Huawei Beijing Executive Briefing Center, received the minister.

Huawei demonstrated their latest 5G technologies research results.  According to Qu, the 5th Generation mobile technology will become a critical infrastructure in a super-connected world.  He mentioned that 5G’s one-millisecond latency would pave way for self-driving vehicles and industrial applications that require extreme low latency. Meanwhile, with a peak speed of 10 GB, 5G will enable one to download an 8GB movie in almost no time. The company plans to spend over $600 million on 5G R&D between 2013 and 2018.  It expects that 5G will be put in commercial use by 2020. Qu also showed Venson-Moitoi the Huawei telepresence video conferencing system. On 21 May, a handover ceremony between the Chinese Embassy and MoFAIC was held in Gaborone to deliver the 10 sets of video conferencing systems donated by China. The system connects MoFAIC with its foreign missions in 10 countries around the world.

Qu said Huawei is proud to be the equipment provider for MoFAIC’s video conferencing system to facilitate communication between its headquarters and missions abroad.

During the Huawei company presentation, Qu said that Huawei’s products and solutions are used in more than 170 countries around the world, serving one-third of the world’s population with global revenue in 2014 amounting to $46.5 Billion.  The company, he said, invests over 10 percent of its revenue in R&D, putting innovation as the key factor for the company’s development.

Qu said Huawei has been operating in Botswana for 17 years and has very sound cooperation with operators like BTCL, Mascom and BoFiNet, and its local arm, Huawei Botswana, is constantly carrying out corporate social responsibility (CSR) events to benefit local communities.
