The stadium, with a 40 000 seating capacity, is in the National Development Plan (NDP) 11 plan.  When answering a question from Kgosi Nametso Kopelo on whether he does not deem it necessary to build a second stadium with a bigger carrying capacity in Gaborone, the Minister Thapelo Olopeng said their challenge is unavailability of land. “It is indeed necessary to build a second stadium with a bigger carrying capacity in or around Gaborone.

The challenge we are facing is unavailability of land in this area. “Such a stadium would be instrumental in facilitating the country’s possibility of hosting major international sport events such as Africa Cup of Nations, African Athletics champions and the Commonwealth Youth Games, among others,” Olopeng told Ntlo ya Dikgosi.

Some Dikgosi, however, found no reason for government to fret over unavailability of land while Mogoditshane, which is in the vicinity of Gaborone, has plenty.   Also in the plan, said the minister, is constructing small and big stadiums around the country.   He, however, said there is no specific date set for the construction of the proposed sport facility in Kanye. “It should be noted that all projects, including the Kanye stadium, were deferred during NDP 10 owing to adverse economic conditions, will be re-prioritised during the NDP 11 planning process which has started,” he explained.

He said the re-prioritisation was intended to take into consideration of both deferred projects and new projects to address the current and future needs of the country.
