World Bank invests $1bn in Gabs roads

The money will be used for construction of intersection roads in the city. Gaborone mayor Kagiso Thutlwe said their intention is to improve road traffic management, especially during peak hours.
“The tender documents to procure the contractor to carry out the detailed design and upgrading of the traffic signals with installation of Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) have been completed and it is expected to be floated end of June,” Thutlwe said.
He said the upgrading of the traffic signals and installation of CTC is estimated will take 30 months and thereafter the contractor will continue with operation and maintenance for the following five years.
The mayor said the money will also be used to engage a contractor who will provide maintenance services on the entire existing traffic signalling system in greater Gaborone.
“The contractor shall be required to undertake routine and preventative maintenance tasks, as well as replacement of components as part of emergency. The plan is to float tender documents in July and the award is expected around September 2015,” he said.
He said they will also upgrade three circles into interchanges along KT Motsete road western by pass into Gaborone’s own spaghetti junctions.
Thutlwe said Gaborone Multimodal Transportation study had recommended undertaking studies for preparing conceptual design options for each of the three intersections along K.T Motsete drive where it meets Lobatse road (Game city), Willie Seboni (BTV) and Kudumatse drive (Rainbow). “Once the optimal design option has been approved by the client, the consultant shall prepare the bidding documents for implementation of the intersection. Planned date of tendering is October 2015 and award is expected three months later,” he said, adding that they would build a bus line.
The mayor said the money was given through the Ministry of Infrastructure, Science and Technology and the projects would be awarded to GCC after completion.
