Kgosi Tawana II portrait commissioned

The event is organised by Kgosi Tawana Moremi’s age regiment of Matsaakgang. The regiment member Chippa Mohiemang told Mmegi that the event is part of an ongoing initiative to revive the Batawana culture.
He said the portrait of the Kgosi would serve as an official photograph, adding that they had decided to launch it as a way of documenting the Batawana culture for future generations.
According to Mohiemang, the photograph will be sold to members of the public and other interested parties at P75. He explained that the day would include celebration activities, and feature speakers who will share tidbits on the history of the morafe. He also said that some people have already donated cows to be eaten during the day’s festivities, adding that the event would showcase the culture of all the tribes in Ngamiland.
Mohiemang said that proceeds of the sales of the portrait would be used for undertaking some of the identified community projects to be taken by the age regiment.
The projects include building a shelter for the elderly close to the two post offices situated in Maun. He said that other projects lined up by the age regiment include revival and documentation of historical sites in Ngamiland.
He added that as part of this initiative, they would also undertake a massive refurbishment of graveyards of the fallen Batawana former chiefs, elders and leaders of the district.
“We plan to erect tombstones on the graves of our fallen chiefs in Toteng village and at Kavimba in the Chobe district,” he said.
