Bana Ba Botswana Charitable Trust launched

Deputy Speaker and MP for Gaborone South, Kagiso Molatlhegi will officially launch the trust at their offices in Bontleng. The trust, which is run by a board of trustees consisting of seven members, was registered on November 28 last year.
Chula Dahanayake, honorary Consul of Sri Lanka said that the objective of the trust is to work for the welfare of children in Botswana. “The trust aims to uphold and strive to achieve the ideals contained in the African Charter on the rights and welfare of children adopted in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia on July 1990 and entered into force on November 1999,” he said. Dahanayake also said that among others Bana Ba Botswana should assist in the development of institutions, facilities and services for care of children as well as provide educational support. “
Bana Ba Botswana aims to promote health care and social and economic support for children in Botswana without discrimination of any kind,” he said.
Dahanayake also said that the charitable trust was formed to provide special protection to children temporarily or permanently and also raise funds to finance programmes for the benefit of children. He added that among their many objectives, Bana Ba Botswana seek to establish a house or institution for the reception of children in need of care and provide care, maintenance, education and vocational training for children or juveniles.
“Bana Ba Botswana will engage in the protection of children’s rights and the prevention of child abuse. The trust intends to liaise with and engage in joint activities with organisations supporting children,” he said.
An executive committee and a team of volunteers will run the trust, and they will be responsible for organising the children’s activities.
