While many feared his seat may go vacant if he did not make it to this week’s Gaborone City Council full council meeting, the Council Act shows that Motlaleng can only lose his seat if he misses full council meetings three consecutive times.

This means Motlaleng will have to attend one of the two council sessions after the current session.

Yesterday, Gaborone mayor Kagiso Thutlwe stopped calls from some councillors who wanted Motlaleng’s whereabouts to be discussed at the council meeting.

“Councillors I want this issue to be clear to you all. You cannot keep on asking about the whereabouts of councillor Motlaleng or whether he has bought sick leave,” Thutlwe said.

“We work with apologises from the members and one of the councillors had apologised for councillor Motlaleng saying that he is sick.

I rely on that information that the councillor has said. I can only have information if his party had written to our office or if his family member had communicated,” said Thutlwe.

He said councillors should only wish Motlaleng a quick recovery so that he can come back and serve his people. Last week, Motlaleng’s attorney Martin Dingake told Mmegi that his client had fled the country for security reasons.
