Golfers line-up for Makgadikgadi Open

A strong line-up including defending champions, Peter Modise, Noah Majube, Robert Majube and Ntando Ramphethu, is expected to descend on the town for the event, which is a premier Botswana Golf Union (BGU) sanctioned tournament.
Botswana Ash has sponsored the event to the tune of P58, 000.
BGU secretary general Mpho Kelosiwang said the tournament would be divided into four categories, the A Division (Handicap+to 9), B-Division (Handicap 10 to 16), C-Division (Handicap 17 to 24) and 4 womens (0-30).
Kelosiwang said for six consecutive years, the tournament will include women golfers.
“BGU took the decision to open up all their events with the exception of Botswana Open to female golfers in the country. Botswana is the only country that has a national event of this magnitude open to both sexes. We believe that this will further enhance our unique selling point; golf is a family sport where wife, husband and children can come together and compete,” he said in a media statement.
Kelosiwang added the move is aimed at improving the quality of women golfers by giving them competitive opportunities.
“We believe that this partnership enhances the corporative objectives of Botswana Ash and also improve the status of golf in the country,” he said.
Another sponsor, Nashua, which has chipped in with P25, 000. Quipco will provide golf shirts and caps to the value of P18, 400 while Avis will provide meals, water and energy drinks to the tune of P10, 000.
Botswana Ash public relations and communications coordinator, Kefilwe Batsalelwang said that the mine contributes to the socio-economic development of Sowa Town through its corporate social responsibility initiatives that include sport development. She also said that Modise, Majube, Majube and Ramphethu are the defending champions in Division A, B, C and women categories respectively.
“Forty five golfers have already registered to take part in the tournament,” she said, adding they are expecting entries from Gaborone, Orapa, Jwaneng and Kasane.
