Handover of revamped Parly flats starts

The minister of Infrastructure, Science and Technology Nonofo Molefhi toured the project yesterday and was informed that work was proceeding quickly on the flats.
Department of Building and Engineering Services’ project manager, Alphonse Jayachandram told Molefhi that four flats would be handed over next week.
“The remaining flats will be handed over by the end of the month to Parliament,” he said. “It will be up to Parliament to decide whether the MPs occupy them immediately or not.
“We are optimistic that all the 25 flats will be done by the end of June.”
Jayachandram said while an effort had been made to address the issue of roof leakages, it was still necessary to replace the roofs entirely.
“The roof should be budgeted for the 2016/17 financial year. The flats are old and for us to completely address the issue of roof leakages, we need to change the roofing.
“Evidence shows that there will be roof leakage in years to come,” he said.
Contractors had also replaced lights, installed solar geysers and sockets, while also replacing existing sanitary wares with modern ones ordered in South Africa. Molefhi said he was impressed with progress made at the project.
“Delays for the work to commence was due to the vacation taken by some clients but the contractor was ready,” he said. “The other problem was also insufficient sanitary ware and we had to order this from South Africa.” Molefhi added: “Next time we will ensure that there is proper project implementation and all suppliers are under control”.
