Govt reaffirms commitment to refugees

Speaking at the commemoration of World Refugee Day last Friday, Sanoto said Botswana also understands that the asylum landscape is premised on a temporary arrangement and as a result refugees have to be assisted to move on with their lives beyond the asylum regime.

“As government we commit to providing protection to refugees and to ensure that whilst still in Botswana they continue to enjoy humane conditions,” he said.

Sanoto said Botswana had a rich history of dealing with refugees dating as far back as the 1970s.

“Government is conscious of the fact that refugee needs in Botswana are far from being met. That is why on occasions such as World Refugee Day, we sensitise the international community about refugees’ needs and appeal for support,” said Sanoto.

He stated that government continues to work closely with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and other concerned governments to ensure that refugees who want to return home are able to return in safety and dignity.

“With the above arrangement, we have been able to successfully negotiate with governments in countries of origin which has resulted in sound repatriation packages and smooth conditions for returnees,” said Sanoto.

Recently, the Government of Botswana signed a cessation clause with the Namibian government under which around 900 refugees from that country will be amicably repatriated.
