Improving figures restore Premier League shine

Former champions, Township Rollers led the way with a total revenue of P2, 587, 444, and the highest number of spectators watching their game.

Of the total amount, Rollers made P1, 166, 520 from the gates. The club made the rest of the money from the league and Mascom grants, Mascom league prize money as well as revenue from the Mascom Top 8.

This was achieved despite a below par season in which the team failed to make headway in the CAF Champions League, failed to defend the league title and lost out to Gaborone United (GU) in the Top 8 final.

Champions Mochudi Centre Chiefs finished the season P2, 276,790 richer, and were the third best supported team with P746, 350 coming from the gates. GU was the season’s third highest earners with total revenue of P2, 085, 406.

But their figure surpassed P2million largely due to the P1million prize money from winning the Top 8 cup. Returns from the gates were disappointing for the Gaborone side as they made only P323, 890.

Sankoyo Bush Bucks were the biggest movers, managing to bank P1, 452, 920 despite not featuring in the Mascom Top 8, which meant there was no revenue from the country’s premier knock-out competition.

Sankoyo was the second best supported team, making P953, 420 from the turnstiles.

Army side, BDF XI were fifth, while the season’s surprise package and runners-up, Orapa United finished the campaign with P1, 142,392.

Modest Selebi-Phikwe side, Nico United was the seventh side to surpass the P1million mark as they made P1,125,700.50.

At the bottom of the finances list was ECCO City Greens, who were unsurprisingly relegated from the Premier League.

The Francistown side made P578, 310 in all, with P148, 310 from gate takings.

With almost half the clubs breaching the P1million mark, league authorities would be pleased with the financial direction.  On average, most clubs use between P1, 5million and P2million per season.

Authorities would be consoled by the improving figures after a protest filled season had dented the image of the league.
