First Division operates without vice chairperson

Sam Keitireng is still the acting chairperson.  He was asked to hold the fort after his predecessor, Tariq Babitseng, was elevated to the position of the Botswana Football Association (BFA) vice president-administration. Keitireng told Mmegi Sport yesterday the assembly was expected to discuss the two positions, but decided to postpone the item to the next meeting.  He also said the appointments would be completed at a meeting to welcome new FDSL teams next month.

“We are still negotiating with Lesirane FC and Rolling Boys representatives to see if they are interested in the position.

We have also given them a chance to liaise with their clubs if they allow them to contest for the position. Despite that, I was interested in Njabulo Gilika being the vice chairperson,” said Keitireng.

First Division League representative in the BFA National Executive Committee (NEC), Eatametse Olopeng said he expected the committee to have asked for a ratification from the assembly to confirm the acting chairperson and also co-opt someone to the vice chairperson’s position. He said the committee should comprise of seven members not five, as it is the current situation in the FDSL. Meanwhile, Olopeng welcomed FDSL proposal on the introduction of a Top 8 tournament.

He said the idea is for clubs and all BFA structures to come up with ways of raising funds. “It is a welcome development and even if they do not find a sponsor, they can find prize money for their clubs at the end of the season,” he said.

He gave an example of the Nhabe Regional Football that awards all the clubs when the season ends, adding that the initiative has been ongoing for the past two years. Olopeng also said the Independence Cup, which is meant to raise funds for Francistown clubs, was also in the pipeline.
