This programme, which will be open to all existing local businesses, will be free and is expected to train entrepreneurs on ways to access international markets as well as how to ship their products.

In an interview with BusinessWeek, the managing director for DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa, Charles Brewer said they decided to come up with this programme after realising that many SMME’s have the potential to penetrate the international markets, but they do not have the knowledge on how to do so.

“Most of them cannot afford training yet they need it. We also plan to expand our footprint as the more business people we train them and empower, the higher the possibilities of them becoming our customers,” he explained.  Brewer added that they had decided to focus on developing the SMME sector as they realised that it plays an important role in contributing to the economy, and creating employment.

On another note, Brewer said the Botswana market had been vibrant adding that they expect growth in all sectors especially after launching their state of art facility.  “

The improvement of technology is playing a very important role in the development of our business as we are currently using advanced machines which helps our daily operations effectively and efficiently.”

DHL, which was the first courier company to the enter Botswana about 32 years ago, has close to 13 retail outlets across the country. It employs about 50 locals and two expatriates. The company launched its new P6 million headquarters in Gaborone yesterday.
