Prison escapee kills woman, is rearrested

In a statement, police said the suspect broke out of prison on June 5, where he had been serving a 21-year jail term for offences including rape, robberies, break-in and escaping from lawful custody.

Yesterday, police spokesperson, Dipheko Motube said the victim, who is a Motswana of South African origin, had been found in a bush near her farm at Thema location.  “She was found on the evening of June 8 with serious head injuries and was rushed to a local hospital where she later passed on,” he said.

The suspect has been returned to prison. Last week, police reported that a 39-year-old man, Ndobanyana Stanke, had escaped from prison in Gaborone and was on the run. 

Yesterday, however, they declined to comment on the identity of the suspect in the Lobatse murder case. “We can only reveal suspect’s names when they appear in court,” Motube said. “We want to assure members of the Lobatse community that we have their safety at heart.” Motube said Stanke, meanwhile, had been rearrested near Lobatse.  “Details about where and when will follow later,” he said.
