Mathokgwane’s recent job appointment as Regional Operations Director at the Selebi-Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU), took centre stage again yesterday when Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), Peggy Serame, appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Member of Parliament for Selebi-Phikwe West, Dithapelo Keorapetse asked the PS to clarify how the Regional Operations Director was appointed at SPEDU.

Serame responded that her ministry was not responsible for the appointment of any other positions at SPEDU, explaining that the ministry only appoints the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “For parastatals, the minister appoints the CEO, other positions are appointed by the board and the CEO.  The operational structure is also approved by the board,” she said.

Serame added that when the board approved operational structure of SPEDU last year, there were some vacant director positions but the Regional Operations Director could not have been one of them.

“After the recent appointment of SPEDU’s new Regional Operations Director, I consulted the CEO at SPEDU about the issue and he told me that there was a position which was advertised and the said individual had applied and was subsequently interviewed,” she said.
