During a nerve wrecking episode of the elimination show, which airs on DStv's M-Net every Monday, Daniel Baron became the second top 10 contestant to leave the show.
The young man admitted to the presenter that he was not expecting to leave the show at this early stage, but appreciated that South Africans had spoken. While public voting in shows of this nature seems more credible, it is not without its flaws. The top 10 eliminations are strictly left in the hands of the viewers, who vote for their favourite contestant, with the contestant who receives the least number of votes being the one to exit the show.
This kind of voting sometimes can get rid of the most talented, leaving behind those, who are not necessarily better. Baron's situation is a case in point because he was one of the potential winners though he appeared in the lower votes during Sunday's performance. The theme for the past Sunday show saw many contestants choosing mostly laid back oldies, which rendered some of the performances rather boring. Baron, of course, suffered a blow, for this particular performance as he seems to have been the least impressive to the voting public. After his display, two of the judges shot him down, marking it his worst performance. However, even at his worst moment, Baron was still better than some of the contestants, but the voters decided otherwise.
South African Idols is now left with eight contestants: Thembi Nkosi, Cameron Bruce, Pixie Bennett, Sasha-Lee Davids, Lize Heerman, Jason Hartman, Lendel Moonsamy, and Graeme Watkins.
