Sebego defends Zebras performance

In addition, he justified some of the association’s decisions that have attracted public criticism.

Addressing a full Francistown council meeting, Sebego noted that they were still in the rebuilding process.

“Most of the players in the national team are young and still learning the ropes. We are confident that in the next few years, the team’s performance will improve.

Even when we brought in the new coach, rebuilding was part of his main mandate,” he said.

He added that all the decisions made were done in the interest of the association.

“We will not shy away from taking decisions that are in the interest of the association just because we do no want to be criticised,” he said.

Sebego was responding to irate councillors, who felt that the national team’s performance has reached its all time low as evidenced by the poor showing at the just ended COSAFA Cup held in South Africa. Councillors are of the view that Botswana could not have lost against a less fancied Mozambique nor Madagascar.

Councillors also felt that the BFA and its technical team might be doing something wrong, which impacted negatively on the team’s performance. They further opined that the BFA might be losing public trust by constantly making decisions that attract controversy.

Among those who complained about the affairs at the BFA were Itekeng ward councillor, Lesego Kwambala and Ephraim Maiketso of Central ward.

Meanwhile, Sebego urged major Francistown soccer teams to merge and form a single team, in a bid to attract sponsors and mobilise resources in a consolidated manner.

Sebego also said one of reasons the teams in here are not doing well is because there are many teams competing for same sponsors.

“ Clubs in Orapa and Jwaneng have merged and the arrangement seem to be working because the teams now appear to be stronger than ever,” he said.

Sebego pleaded with the Francistown City Council to avail the Francistown Stadium to the BFA, for the latter to implement the FIFA goal project, which is funded to a tune of P5.6 million.

The councillors agreed that the council should avail the stadium to the BFA, for the FIFA goal project.

They, however, resolved to discuss the subject extensively at a later date, before a conclusive decision is made.

The BFA is supposed to have handed over its proposal for the project to FIFA by September.
