Compensation for Maun airport relocated residents due month-end

Appearing before the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communication, Goitsemang Morekisi confirmed that the residents would be paid their dues after her ministry concludes consultations by the end of June.

In 2011, two hundred and fifty six people who were relocated sued the government for over P5 million for breach of contract. Yesterday, Maun East MP Kosta Markus wanted to know how far the Ministry is in compensating the residents and how much they will be paid.

“We will conclude how much they will be given by the end of this month.  We have been in intense consultations over the past months,” Morekisi said.

Morekisi however stated that not all the affected residents would be paid during this financial year.  Also, she said that the only reason they are delaying to pay the residents is because they are working with two other departments who are also affected.

“At this moment we do not know how much it is we will have to pay the residents, we may not be able to pay all of them at the same time but some will be paid this year,” she said. “We are tussling between the Ministry of Lands and Housing and the Attorney General, we have to consult them too, that is why it seems the process is taking a bit of time, but I can assure you that everything will be concluded by end of this month,” said Morekisi. The permanent secretary also said that she would submit the names of who would be the first to receive their remuneration to the committee soon.
