Although Ntuane is not aligned to any lobby list leading to the July party’s congress, members supporting different lobby groups at the meeting endorsed him.

While Ntuane’s opponents in the race are yet to publicly confirm their candidature – BDP primary election rules and regulations bar candidates from talking to the media – Gaothaetse Matlhabaphiri, Olebeng Ngwakwena and Kefentse Muzwinila are reported to be vying for the position. A close source that attended the internal meeting said that all party members were impressed by Ntuane’s campaign message, which emphasises on reforms in order to turn the ruling party into an appealing organisation.

Mmegi has also learnt that none of the speakers at the meeting opposed Ntuane’s candidature. Yesterday, councillor Lesego Kwambala who was among the speakers at the weekend meeting also confirmed that party members endorsed Ntuane.

“The reforms he preaches are what the BDP need to be relevant to the electorates. The party has been failing when it comes to attracting the youth as well as engaging the media and the reforms he preaches aim to rectify that. Ntuane also appears to be a hard worker, which is what is needed to change the fortunes of the party for the better,” he said. Kwambala added: “It is also probably the first time a person (referring to Ntuane) is putting issues forward during party campaigns, which is very impressive”.

He noted that Ntuane knows the party very well and has worked in various structures for over two decades, which is why Francistown members feel that he is the best person to take them forward.

Mmegi has also learnt that other councillors samong them Peter Ngoma, Peter Williams, James Kgalajwe and Mayor Sylvia Muzila were among those who attended the meeting. Ntuane, reportedly spent more than an hour articulating the reforms he wants to implement once elected as SG.
