Lobatse Beef Festival Breaths Life To Lobatse

Showtime caught up with some of the attendees who shared the same grievances.
“We thought there was going to be an assortment of beef, we paid P150 not to get ‘setoki sa nama’. This is a rip off,” some people who attended the festival complained.
Showtime also visited the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) stall, expecting a variety of dishes prepared from local beef, as previously mentioned by the BMC Communication and Public Relations Officer, Brian Dioka at the pre-event press conference.
“We want batswana to identify with the products of BMC, we want them to experience the quality of BMC meat, and as such only the finest meat which we export to other countries will be given out for free at the event,” Dioka said at the press conference.
During the event the personnel at the BMC stall could not explain how the dishes were prepared, instead they resorted to distributing recipe notes.
The event organizer, Barolong Seboni, however explained that some people who came to the event got it all wrong. He said that they had they had been clear from the beginning that there will be no meat lined up abundantly instead patrons would be given sachets of braai meat upon entry.
“I do not know where people got that idea.
It has always been the tradition and we have talked about it in our interviews that revellers would be given braai meat and braai stands to braai according to own liking.”
“This is a lifestyle oriented event, there is a festival and stalls at everyone’s disposal,” Seboni explained.
Besides the hiccup in its fourth year running, the LIBF once again lived up to expectation by bringing the country’s eyes to Lobatse. On Saturday, after the day festivities it was Mafitlhakgosi who set the mood.
The traditional group from Old Naledi entertained the crowd before folklore artist Kabo Leburu got on stage. After Leburu radio personality Sylvester DJ Sly Ntshinogang of Motsetserepa fame took to decks.
DJ Sly who has been on radio for the past 15 years did not shake the crowd as he has always been known to, but it was Lobatse based DJ who stole the show, playing kwaito.
Just as it was getting hotter, male band, Team Distant, who recently released their latest single Sax On The Floor tore the stage up, with their exquisite performance.
With their trademark artistry drum beats, the group which broke into the industry with their first single Oni Korota left revellers yearning for more.
The beef festival continued on Sunday with a jazz festival dubbed Jazz a LIBF.
Since the event is a beef festival, many thought they would be given monstrous amounts of beef in all its forms, but to their disappointment they were only given small pieces
of braai meat and mealie-meal.
