DIS systems hacked

Names, identity documents numbers and place of operation were leaked to the public on May 21, by a group calling itself ‘Asparagus’.  The information was later posted on the website of a local radio station Facebook Page on Thursday afternoon. Efforts to speak to the DIS Director General Isaac Kgosi were unsuccessful as he is said to be on a trip outside the country for several days.

The leak is in breach of the Intelligence and Security Act, which prohibits the identification of the DIS agents by anyone. According to the group the released names of the DIS agents are just a tip of an iceberg, as more names would be released in future. Only 25 names were released.

While Mmegi has been able to verify the authenticity of some released names, it hasn’t been possible to talk to the alleged hackers. Despite the seriousness of this matter Botswana Police Service spokesperson, assistant commissioner Christopher Mbulawa refused to talk to Mmegi, let alone confirm or deny that they are investigating the matter. Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Eric Molale was unavailable for comment.

In addition to the published names, the group has vowed to release images of senior government officials in compromising positions.
