In a new twist, the fiery former Member of Parliament for Goodhope-Mabule constituency, James Mathokgwane is said to have joined the public service.

Mmegi is reliably informed that Mathokgwane would join SPEDU as one of the top managers. SPEDU is a Selebi-Phikwe diversification body under the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

A highly placed source within the organisation yesterday revealed that Mathokgwane has been appointed the Regional Operations Manager and is expected to resume duty on June 1, 2015.

It is understood that Mathokgwane applied for the job and was called for an interview recently in Gaborone.

“SPEDU advertised its positions and Mathokgwane applied like any other candidate and the interview panel was impressed with him and he emerged the right candidate for the position,” said a source.

Given his background as a social worker, Mathokgwane emerged as the rightful candidate as SPEDU is a regional body that would need someone who can interact with the communities in the Selebi-Phikwe area, said the source.

Contacted for comment, SPEDU Chief Executive Officer Dr.  Mokubung Mokubung denied any knowledge of Mathokgwane’s appointment.

There are also allegations that the ruling party has had a hand in Mathokgwane’s resignation from parliamentary seat to pave for Kitso Mokaila for him to be elected to the national assembly. Mokaila is currently a specially elected MP. If Mokaila returns, it is said he would add spice to the race to succeed President Ian Khama in 2018 when he leaves office.

Masisi had always been seen as a compromise VP after the fall of Khama’s preffered successors.
