Mathokgwane contested for the MP seat more than twice, but only emerged victorious in last year’s October 24 general elections, ticketing under the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).

Mathokgwane is a member of the Botswana National Front (BNF), which is an affiliate of the UDC.  The speaker of the National Assembly, Gladys Kokorwe, confirmed the MP’s resignation. “I received a letter from the MP this morning (yesterday), stating that he is resigning with immediate effect.

He did not state the reasons for his resignation. He instead noted that the issue is personal,” she said.

BNF spokesperson, Moeti Mohwasa said that the party was aware of Mathokgwane’s resignation. “We tried to talk to him as members of the BNF, but he insisted that the issue was personal, so there was nothing we could do. He of course engaged us before submitting his resignation letter to the National Assembly,” he said.

Mathokgwane has served under several parliamentary committees such as Labour and Home Affairs, Health and HIV/AIDS, Governance and Oversight and Southern African Development Community-parliamentary forum. While allegations are rife that Mathokgwane has found a better paying job, he has denied claims that he has resigned from Parliament.
