Speaking at the hand over ceremony of Lions Club International (LCI) committees on Saturday, Kokorwe said it was incumbent upon various stakeholders to help government in that regard.

“Much as government is obliged to develop and empower its people, it’s impossible for the state to solve all the problems or to meet all the demands of its people.

“It is for this reason that government fully supports and encourages the existence of service organisations like LCI. We, in government believe in mutual social responsibility and that we are partners in development,” said Kokorwe.

Kokorwe commended LCI for the good causes it had undertaken throughout the country and worldwide since its formation in 1917.

“…LCI are now best known for their sight-related programmes including sight first and the world’s largest blindness prevention programmes. LCI has been supporting humanitarian projects like building hospitals, community centres, rehabilitation centres, parks among others,” said Kokorwe.

In Botswana LCI contributed to the rehabilitation centre in Selebi-Phikwe, Lions Leseding Eye Clinic in Mochudi, Ikaleng Girl Guides in Serowe and the emergency grants for flood victims in Nata, Francistown, Palapye and Mahalapye to mention but a few, she noted.

Kokorwe also applauded Lions of Francistown for continuing to conduct health camps in and around Francistown.

“During these camps they check blood pressure, diabetes and preventable blindness and identify people at risk and refer them to the nearest health facilities for appropriate interventions in collaboration with local authorities,” said Kokorwe.

Kokorwe told the gathering that Lions of Francistown had recently received reading glasses from their counterparts in Spain to distribute to the needy and underprivileged communities.

“Your various activities aimed at empowering people bode well with the Vision 2016 of building a compassionate and caring nation,” she said.
