Thobega is no more

BDF XI spokesperson, Spencer Kesebonye said the player has been in the Intensive Care Unit for sometime after the car he was travelling in with two friends overturned. The friends were treated for minor injuries and discharged hours after the accident.

Thobega and company were coming from a Splash festival in Molapowabojang and the driver of the car is said to have lost control.  Kesebonye said since the accident, they have not seen the player. Only his close relatives were allowed to visit him. Thobega who originates from Mmankgodi was a sergeant in the Botswana Defence Force (BDF).  He played for Mogoditshane Fighters before he joined BDF XI. Together with the likes of Masego 'Abedi' Ntshingane and Barney 'Tonight' Marman, he was a  member of the unstoppable  Mogoditshane Fighters side, coached by David Bright a few years ago. The team won every cup available in Botswana football.

On Saturday, Kesebonye said they decided to host Nico United as they could not ask for a postponement because Majombolo had travelled all the way from Selebi-Phikwe for the game. The game ended in a 2-2 draw in Lobatse.

Kesebonye described Thobega's death as a great loss to the BDF XI and the nation. The player was recalled to the national team towards the end of last year. 'It has depressed us. He was a leader and an inspiration to other players,' he said.
