BLLAHWU Drags Govt To Court

In his affidavit, the BLLAHWU secretary general Ketlhalefile Motshegwa said for the purposes of collecting subscriptions levies and other union dues, the government in 2005 extended to them the use of deduction code which enabled the union to collect subscriptions dues and levies directly from members’ salaries.
However, that deduction code has since been discontinued for BLLAHWU members without explanation.
Motshegwa added that at the end of the month of February 2015, the code was partially restored for only BLLAHWU members in the Ministry of Health.
BLLAHWU argues this was a breach of agreement with the employer. “The right to loan repayments directly from union members’ salaries, through the use of a loan deduction code, is an organisational right, which the applicant has enjoyed for several years. This organisational right is entrenched in the applicant’s recognition agreement,” Motshegwa said. He is wondering why the unfair treatment was meted only against his Union and not others. He says the matter is urgent as the Union is currently unable to collect subscriptions from members through the code.
