Every time a rhino debit cardholder swipes or uses the card, they will contribute a certain amount of money towards the rhino conservation trust. According to the bank’s managing director, Reinette van der Merwe, the project presents opportunities to the youth in those areas. She said the card fulfills the bank’s corporate social responsibility mandate as well as enhance their involvement in protecting the natural resources of Botswana and youth empowerment.

“To get the debit card you have to be a current Barclays customer. If you are a first timer, you will be issued this card once your account is active and opened.

“For current debit card holders they can at any time switch to the debit card, which will be activated immediately to replace the current card they are in possession of,” said van der Merwe.

She encouraged the bank customers and clients to actively use the card and become part of the efforts to save the rhino, which is under severe threat from poachers.

In response, the KCS acting chief executive officer, Baboloki Autlwetse noted that the support from Barclays “will allow KCS and other community based organisations to continue our work in rhino and environmental conservation and provide sustainable income generating ideas for the youth. Botswana is uniquely placed to make sure that both can live harmoniously side by side”.
