Mad Max - Fury Road is totally something else and it left tongues wagging over the weekend as it brought some spectacular fast and furious driving as well as some sort of crazed death race to the screen. This film is a 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic action film and it is the fourth film of Miller’s Mad Max franchise, which started 30 years ago. Theron takes the role of Imperator Furiosa, a badass army general gone rogue. Tom Hardy brings his mischief into the picture as (Max Rockatansky) a convict turned fugitive. A recap about Theron and Hardy’s careers shows us that the two have big movie temperaments as they have appeared in huge films like The Italian Job and Batman The Dark Knight. Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) is our movie villain who has people living in fear in Fury Road. George Miller directs the film. Now let us zoom in on Mad Max: Fury. Haunted by his turbulent past, Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. He becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannised by Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs.
What gives this film an edge is its cinematography. Mad Max is set in a future Australian desert wasteland where gasoline and water are scarce commodities. This movie is action-packed and fascinating from start to finish. The exciting thing about the movie is that it explores action themes such as power struggle, liberty pursuit and ransoms.
Scenes validate such where Furiosa ventures off route in her heavily armoured War Rig. Immortal Joe realises that his five wives – women specially selected for breeding are gone, which sparks a hot road rage pursuit. The film uses exaggeration as its main element; for instance, Immortal Joe played by Hugh Keays-Byrne looks creepy with masks and respiratory problems, and having to drink breast milk to stay in shape.
Mad Max also has a dark yet funny sense of humour. The film is simply an all rounder as it caters for everyone. For example there are old women rolling in dirt bikes fighting Immortal Joe. The movie is also made fun by its 3D picture aspect. Certainly Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the best films of 2015 simply because it uses suspense, tension, and excitement as its main elements.
Thrillers like this usually stimulate the viewer’s moods, giving them a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety and terror.
The characters were also on point particularly Furiosa, as she was way mad in this epic blockbuster as a warrior with one hand. She kicks butt with her artificial hand. The movie ends well with victory for the rebels, which signals that in future we might see a sequel. Movie quotes, which indicate the film’s craziness, include Max Rockatansky: “My name is Max. My world is fire. And blood.”
Now with regard to receptions in cinemas as well as box office Mad Max: Fury Road is doing well. Locally it was the highlight movie of last weekend’s releases. Internationally according to box office, this film premiered at the number two spot with an opening weekend reception of $45 million coming from a $150 million budget. It has gone on to amass a current global gross of $115 million in its first week worldwide. This week sees Avengers knocked off the first spot after topping the box office chart for two weeks. 1.
