Boitekanelo students donate to Jwaneng

The students made the donation at the end of their attachment at the department of health management in Jwaneng. Their representative, Katlarelo Mmantsima, said that during their three-month stay, they conducted a needs assessment survey in schools and the community in their endeavours to leave a mark in the mining town.
“We then realised that littering is one of the major health hazards in the town and we approached potential sponsors to help us make a difference,” she said.
She stated that Majwe Mining, Majoboge Construction and Debswana Jwaneng Mine helped by buying five dustbins to be placed around the mall and Sese bus rank.
Outgoing Umbrella Village Development chairperson, Justice Motaung expressed gratitude to the students for their gesture. He said the VDC has been concerned about littering in the town since last year and made a request for help to Jwaneng Town Council but so far, there has been no positive response.
He said that littering can be a health hazard and challenged the community to keep the mining town sparkling like its precious diamonds. He said the donation of dustbins came at an opportune time and will benefit the mall as it is mostly where people meet.
He thanked Boitekanelo College for availing students who made an impact in Jwaneng. Kgosi Sigale Letshele of Jwaneng Customary Court challenged other companies and the community to join hands to fight littering.
He called on the environmental department to arrange how the Jwaneng Mine can donate empty diesel barrels to be used as dustbins. He applauded the students, stating that they are indeed following Vision 2016 which dictates that Botswana should be a safe nation. He said it is the responsibility of every citizen to keep and dispose litter safely for good health.
Besides, the dustbins, the Boitekanelo students donated a backyard garden to a destitute in Jwaneng. The students also gave motivational talks and raised public health awareness in schools.
