The team arrived in the country on Sunday evening.

Team coach, Owen Caple told Mmegi Sport yesterday that he was impressed by the performance of the team. The Botswana team brought home eight gold, four silver and nine bronze medals. Caple said the swimmers prepared for the championships at their individual clubs.

He said the swimmers were aged between 11 and 17 years. He added that Botswana swimmer, James Freeman was chosen the best swimmer in the Under-13 age group after winning six gold medals. He said Botswana finished the competition in sixth position overall, with boys coming fourth and girls seventh overall. Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles, Lesotho, Madagascar, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa attended the CANA event.

Meanwhile, Caple appreciated the support that parents gave to their children in the preparation and during the tournament.

“Parents have given their children major support and that kept them pushing hard and doing well in the competition.  “This is a major achievement in the international arena especially when compared to last year.  “This is positive development. It also shows that swimming is growing as a sport in the country,” said Caple.
