Miss Africa tipped to put Gaborone on the Map

Speaking during the launch of the pageant at Boipuso Hall on Saturday, the Mayor mentioned that Miss Africa would help to sell Gaborone to the world.

“The city of Gaborone will be the centre of attraction as the whole world will be watching the upcoming pageant,” he said. A total number of 55 countries are expected to take part in the pageant to be held next year.

Thute said the event will not only put Gaborone on the map, but it will also create job opportunities for young entrepreneurs. Delegates from different countries such as Lesotho and France graced the well-attended launch, which was a suit and tie event.

Giving a brief description of the pageant Bruce Nkgakile the CEO of Miss Africa mentioned that the event is not just an ordinary beauty pageant. He explained that Miss Africa is meant to unite and rebrand Africa. “We need to show the world that we are a united and beautiful continent. Africa has always been known for poverty and venereal diseases so this is the platform to show the beautiful image of Africa,” Nkgakile stated. He mentioned that Miss Africa would also promote youth advocacy especially on the girl child and tourism sectors of different countries.

As a build up of the event the participating countries will host beauty pageants in their respective countries and the winners will participate in the Miss Africa final. Auditions for the Botswana pageant are starting at the end of this month, they will be held in different cities, towns and villages.

Modeling experts such as Motamma Sesinyi, Betty Seatlholo and Boingotlo Motlalekgosi will be part of the scouting panel.

Performer, Benson Phutego, who was the MC of the night kept the audience entertained with his poetic skills and jokes. Former My Star contestant Amantle gave a classic musical performance of her latest single Moratiwa.
